Low Pressure Moving In

“You don’t mind if I take your secret chocolate stash back with me, do you? I’ll bring you some back after the storm,” Sophie said.

“You know where it is,” Esther’s mom said.

Sophie flew into the kitchen and returned quickly to the door to leave with Esther and Parker.

“Won’t you stay?” Mrs. Ito smoothed Sophie’s hair.

Sophie gave her mother a quick hug. “I’ll be fine, Mom. They need me.”

“Bye, Essy. You don’t have to come back. I like Paisley.” Mary put a tiara on Paisley, who stuck her tongue out at Parker. He winked, and Esther smiled.

“K, princess. Your minion is leaving.” When Esther opened the door, she heard the diesel motor of the power company truck. “Mom! The power company is here.”

Even though they could see the truck from inside, the group gathered on the large wraparound porch. Two men in hard hats stood at the intersection. One had his hard hat off and was scratching his head. The other had his hands on his hips and was looking up the road.

“Jack!” Esther’s mother called.

Jack waved.

“How long?” Grace called.

Jack had on metal spikes strapped to steel-toe boots. He walked their way while the snow fell softly. “Hi, Grace. How’s Hart doing? Is he working?”

“No. He and Karen’s husband, Ironpot, are away at training.”

“Darn. Well. You should be safe enough. Just stay off the road. We almost slid off the side and into the river when we were trying to drive over the bridge. The roads are bad. And whatever you do, don’t drive by that mess.” He pointed back at the tangled power lines and poles mixed with driftwood in the intersection. “My guys told me about it earlier, but I didn’t believe them.”

“It was scary. We had a waterspout. How long until we have power?” Grace asked again.

Jack laughed. “Luckily, you have me. But it might be a day or two if the weather doesn’t warm up. I heard there are thirty- and forty-foot-high piles of trees on both Highway 26 and 30. We are essentially cut off from Portland. The creek has flooded the road again on the way to the junction. We’re pretty much trapped until they clear the trees. I have some poles and equipment to fix this mess, but there are so many poles and transformers out it will take our crew more time without help from the city. My guess, two days.”

Grace smiled and shrugged. “I love the coast.” She laughed lightly.

“Are you going to be okay?” He pointed up and said, “I see you have a chimney but no smoke. Will you be able to stay warm?”

“We have a gas log. We’re used to this.” She smiled, and he chuckled.

“Well, I have to go back to assessing damage. Crews will be working round the clock. Remember, 911 is down. If we’re out here and you need us, we have HAM radios.”

“I’ve been meaning to get one,” Grace said.

“I think everyone should have them. Well, back to work!”

Grace hugged Esther. “You heard him.
